What is Iyengar Yoga?


Iyengar yoga is a practical solution to the stresses of modern-day life.  The method of practising yoga which has become known as ‘Iyengar Yoga’ has been developed by BKS Iyengar.  He was taught by the renowned yogi T Krishnamacharya and devoted his life to its study and teaching.


In the Iyengar method of yoga, a variety of props are used to enable students to achieve the best possible position in the asanas, so making it accessible to the stiffest person of any age. All the exercises are graded to ensure safe progression from complete beginner to competent yoga practitioner. Students work at their own pace and receive individual help.Today, Iyengar yoga is taught world-wide and many believe Iyengar to be the foremost exponent of yoga.


Many aches and pains and general stiffness can be prevented, overcome or managed through regularly attending a yoga class.  People who have chronic physical or health conditions need individual tuition so that they can learn how to adapt the yoga movements to target their particular condition.  Often such people will then be able to join a class, alongside some individual tuition if it is needed.


Sportsmen/women find that Iyengar Yoga not only improves their flexibility, but helps protect from injury and improves their concentration level, making it the perfect complement to any kind of sport. Both Manchester United Football Club and the English National Cricket Team practise yoga as part of their training regime.  Students find yoga helps them to relax and unwind and some opt to take yoga as the physical fitness component of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
